I have always loved computers. I remember as early as 1st grade being called out of class by a teacher to troubleshoot a problem with one of the machines. While that issue was simply her not knowing how to make a menu visible I have since always been the person others go to with questions. Where some see an inscrutable and frustrating box I see a fantastic and wondrous machine.
In my sophomore year of high school I was able to take a Visual BASIC programming class and for the first time really start to understand how these machines worked. I was so interested that it left me torn as to which to pursue in college: programming or filmmaking. I knew I was incredibly interested in both and I went with filmmaking. By the end of my freshman year in film school I was already completely immersed in the study of post production. This part of digital filmmaking starts when the camera stops rolling and ends with the final projection of the film, encompassing editing, color grading, visual effects, and sound design. It was the perfect place for me – an intersection between the magic of filmmaking and the technical power of computers.
Now that I have graduated and am a working post production professional I want to turn back to programming, if only "on the side". I have tried a few times in the past years to pick it up and have completely failed. I don't think this failure was due to a lack of ability or interest but simply a lack of coordinated effort. Like any self-teaching endeavor discipline is key.
This blog is my discipline. It is also my space to write about the broader technology world. I hope that its success will lead me to being able to write software and that it could serve as a guide to others with the same desire.
